Publix takes care of its customers, especially when they are hurt. Publix supermarket is about 4 percent higher on their products than other grocery stores in our area, but their service exceeds that of any other grocery store. I first ran into trouble at the water isle. I was trying to get the pack of 24 waters off the shelf and it wouldn’t budge. I tried and tried. Finally I put everything I had into my efforts to get that water off the shelf (water is heavy!!!) and the pack of waters moved off the shelf and fell through my hands and landed on the floor. The pack of waters burst open and bottles of water went everywhere. Just a second later, there is a Publix employee coming to assist me. He picked up another pack of waters for me and put them in the bottom of my cart. He asked if there was anything else I needed, and I said no, and thanked him. He commenced to picking up all the scattered bottles of water.

I just got the MRI results from my doctor’s office. I have 2 bulging discs pressing into my nerve roots. A suggestion was made that I might benefit from physical therapy, but I told the nurse that I only have transportation one day a week and that might not help me much. I asked about a series of nerve blocks, which the doctor had said might be an option when she examined me. She felt it was probably my back when she checked me in her office. The MRI confirms that she was right.

I will write about my experiences, whether I get the PT or take the nerve blocks. I kind of hope I can get the nerve blocks because I have had a series of 8 of them about 15 years ago and they helped me for a number of years. I used to get terrible foot pain back then, but I was working everyday passing medications, and I thought the pain was just from standing on my feet. I had no idea I had this long history of having a bulging disc, because I was able to walk just a few months ago, but now I can’t walk outside for exercise. I just do work around the house to get my workouts, and lie down when I need to.

Last night I went grocery shopping, and the pain became horrendous. There was a woman in front of me arguing with the cashier about a couple little bottles of shampoo that she bought with coupons. The coupons didn’t work. Instead of paying for her products she continues to stand there and bicker about it. I was in no mood to stand there and wait on her while I was in so much pain. I started to gripe about her under my breath, but my daughter kept telling me to hush. She was in pain too, and in a neck brace due to a bad fall that she took the other day. We were both a couple of “crips.” I left her there to finish checking out while I went and sat down. I was almost in tears due to the pain. One of the workers at Publix saw my daughter wasn’t in much better shape than me, so he finished loading the groceries for her and walked out with us to load the groceries in the car for us.

After I had my Total Knee Replacements I wasn’t able to stand long enough to shop. I had a shopping list and I tried, and the staff is very observant. Before long, a Publix worker asked if I needed any help. I explained that I had recently had TKR surgery. She told me to go sit down and give her my list and she would shop for me. I can’t tell you how much I appreciated that. Yes, Publix is higher, but their staff is there to help you if you are unable to shop. I strongly suggest you shop at Publix if you have any type of disability and need help.

Thanks Carol. They must be trained to pay attention. There is a big difference in the sensitivity of the staff compared to other grocery stores.
